The New Ofsted Scorecard – Demystified
Wait, what’s changing?
You might’ve seen the headlines:
“Ofsted scrapping single-word grades!”
And maybe your first thought was:
“Oh, brilliant, now I’ve got to learn a whole new system in the middle of trying to staff a Wednesday.”
We get it. It’s a lot.
But don’t panic – this new scorecard system isn’t here to trip you up. It’s actually trying to be fairer.
That said… the comms haven’t exactly been crystal clear. (Sorry Ofsted – but you do talk in riddles sometimes.)
So, what is the new scorecard?
Instead of one big word like “Good” or “Requires Improvement,” you’ll now get a report card with ratings across different areas (like safeguarding, curriculum, leadership, SEND).
Each area is scored using these 5 levels:
What it actually means
You're smashing it. Model practice. Tell us your secrets.
You're doing well. Steady, solid, some standout bits.
You're meeting the basics. Nothing worrying, but could level up.
Gaps showing. Ofsted’s eyebrow is raised.
Time to act. Quality improvement is needed here.
Rating
⭐ Exemplary
✅ Strong
🟡 Secure
🟠 Attention Needed
🔴 Causing Concern
(Note: These levels are under consultation and may be subject to adjustments before the final rollout.)

Why they’re doing this
Honestly? Because they’re trying to be more helpful.
One-word grades like “Good” didn’t give parents (or providers) the full story. Now, Ofsted wants to show where you’re strong – and where you might need support.
They know it’s a shift. And it’ll take time to settle.
But it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being clear.
And that’s where we come in.
How Otii helps you get ready – without the drama
When you are in the thick of it – you're not going to have time to memorise all the definitions, remember what counts as “Strong vs Secure”, and whip up evidence folders in your spare five minutes.
That’s our job.
With Otii, you can:
✅ Self-score each area in plain English using our Traffic Light Dashboard
📝 Log what you’re doing already – so your scorecard writes itself
📁 Upload evidence once, use it everywhere
📣 Get reminders if something’s slipping towards “Attention Needed”
🧑🏫 Train staff so they actually know what Ofsted means by “curriculum intent”
Why this matters
Because inspections aren’t going anywhere.
And while this new scorecard might seem like a hassle now, it’s actually a chance to show all the great stuff you’re already doing – in more detail than ever.
You’ve got strong areas. We’ll help you show them.
You’ve got wobbles. We’ll help you sort them.
No panic. No nonsense. Just a smart way to stay on top of things – without a folder mountain or a stress spiral.
Final Words from Otii
